From first hand experience delivering certificates many times, you can see these certificates can cover a lot of ground!
A digital marketing certificate is a great asset at any stage of your marketing career, because it quite comprehensively ties in the major aspects of digital marketing and media through a formal process.
Early Career 1 – 3 years
The digital marketing certificate will enable you to get a broad concept of digital strategy and channels to fast track your career. Sometimes your boss will not have formal qualifications in digital, which means you can be equipped with the needed information to be ready for your next opportunity or promotion.
Mid Career 4 – 9 years
As you change jobs & learn digital through different internal and external partners, a need to round out your knowledge is generally required. To increase your confidence leading strategic digital marketing strategy, you’ll find the certificate will fill in many of the gaps you could have in your knowledge.
Established career – 10+ years
The digital marketing certificate courses that are ideal for professionals who have 10 or more years can fit into many different categories. Some senior executives love time out of the office, away from family to concentrate and solidify digital channels and strategy. Others are looking to move to the other side of the advertising and marketing fence and use it as process to help change careers.
Having taught a digital marketing certificate course for almost 8 years in a variety of formats, I can tell you the depth of knowledge you learn in comparison to other learning programs is the major difference.
In many programs, guest speakers are introduced to bring an outside perspective beyond the tutors and companies experience.
The networking amongst peers is also a great way to establish connections beyond your company. This is particularly important for those who are at an early stage of their marketing career.
For those in a junior to mid-level career, a certificate in digital marketing is a great talking point on your CV or LinkedIn profile. In many instances you’ll have lots of digital strategies, channels and techniques to talk about with your potential employer. Speaking to marketing recruiters, I can tell you it’s highly regarded, especially if your manager is not as confident in digital as they would like to be!
Expect to be challenged, pushed, and even overwhelmed but always keep moving forward! Digital marketing is a broad subject and many providers do their best to pack in as much as they can.
Expect lots of content. These learning programs are jam packed with content that you’ll need to study for, as you will have to sit in on many…
Exams and Assessments. These two are the major differences between a general workshop that you can get at many marketing organisations and private vendors in the marketplace.
Group Work. Yep, it’s back to the uni days! Often a final assessment is pulling together all of your knowledge and applying it to a series of briefs. Expect to meet up in the classroom before class, another week night, or sometimes even the weekend. Either way, you’ll need to find some way of collaboration. Handy hint – use Google docs & Google Drive to share your knowledge and work between your team.
Most certificate of digital marketing programs offer a variety of ways to learn the materials:
Face-to-face evening classes – Just when it’s time to head home, it’s off to marketing class we go! This is often run on a Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
Face-to-face during business hours – Instead of heading to work, you’ll be heading to class. These usually happen over a period of 2-3 months held in CBD locations across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Workshops are generally 9:00 am – 5:00 pm with regular breaks. This is a great way to balance learning without eating into too much of your personal time. But don’t forget, there is group work and assessment to do outside of class.
Online – If you are an individual who is committed to learning in your own environment, at least 2 providers in the industry currently offer the qualification online. Be wary that the quality of learning is just not the same as face to face. It’s very difficult to ask a video, infographic or table a question! Whilst you may be able to email a tutor, it is still no substitute for being in front of a tutor with a small group of people.
- When was the course last updated?
- Who will be the tutor or tutors I’m learning from?
- How many hours will it take to finish the course?
- How many assessment points are there?
- Is the course strategy based, practical, or both? If so which one does it skew?
- What is your refund policy if the first day is not up to expectations?
- Can I speak to past graduates who have finished the course?
Expect to pay around $3500 – $8000 AUD for a certificate or diploma of digital marketing.
